Eagle Scout Court of Honor

I had the opportunity to make this cake for a friend of mine. He was receiving his Eagle Scout and thought it would be nice to have a special cake for him. I decided to replicate the Eagle Scout Emblem for the cake.

Working with Buttercream

Getting buttercream smooth on a cake is not one of my strengths. It takes time and a lot of practice. I have to admit, when I know I'm going to be doing an all buttercream cake, I get a little scared. I know in the end it probably looks great, however, to me, I see all the imperfections and everything I didn't do right. Tonight I did a buttercream cake for boy's birthday. When buttercream is first put on it probably looks something like the following picture.

Here comes the fun part. Smoothing the buttercream. It amazes me how quickly all the cake decorator's on tv can do this. I know it takes a lot of practice and I'm working on it. To smooth the buttercream, every one does it differently. I smooth is with a heated spatula. Fortunately, the places where I was having a lot of difficulty were covered up by other stuff. Overall, I am pleased with the cake. It's cute. I hope the birthday boy enjoys it.

Tangled Birthday Cake

I made this cake for my daughter's 5th Birthday. She loves the movie tangled and I thought it would be a neat idea for a cake. The tower was made using cereal treats and for the house I used a cake dummy. I covered it using fondant with some buttercream embelishments. I'm really pleased with how it turned out. As always, I learn so much with every cake that I do.

My Cake Journey

Welcome! I've decided to create a new blog completely dedicated to all the things that I do with cake. My cake journey began about 5 years ago when my first daughter was born. When her first birthday came closer I thought it would be really cool if I could make her a special cake. So, I took the Wilton I course at my local Hobby Lobby. I really enjoyed it! The rest is history. Cake decorating became a creative outlet for me. A hobby that I enjoyed. Over the years I've learned new skills and techniques through research and experimentation. I regularly read several cake blogs and love them. I've learned so much from what other people have done. I hope that I can do the same for someone else. Enjoy!
